In the terminal network connection of industrial control systems, unmanaged devices build stable channels between PLCS and sensors. The case of Sany Heavy Industry’s injection molding production line proves that: Five unmanaged industrial ethernet switches are connected in series with 32 temperature-controlled sensors (sampling rate 50Hz), and the standard deviation of data packet transmission delay is maintained at ±0.15ms, which is much lower than the jitter value of ±1.2ms for managed switches. The temperature control accuracy has been raised to ±0.5℃ (originally ±2℃), and the product defect rate has decreased by 7.6%. The implementation cost of this plan is only 2,800 yuan (the management plan requires 22,000 yuan), and the payback period is shortened to three months.
The equipment condition monitoring network relies on its environmental tolerance. The cold storage project of CIMC Group shows that when operating continuously in an environment of -35℃, the start-up time of metal-cased equipment is stable at 4.2 seconds ±0.3 seconds (the failure probability of plastic-cased commercial equipment is 35%), and the transmission bit error rate is less than 10⁻¹². When connecting 18 cold chain vehicle monitoring terminals, the 100Mbps port traffic load peaked at 92Mbps and still maintained zero packet loss. Compared with the hub solution, the data loss rate was 17%, the risk of food spoilage was reduced by 12%, and the annual loss cost was saved by 2.3 million yuan.
The application of the security video transmission system has demonstrated cost-effectiveness. At the container terminal of Qingdao Port, 86 devices were deployed to connect 204 cameras. The 1080P video stream transmission occupied a bandwidth of 72Mbps per channel. Through the port flow control function, the incidence of broadcast storms was suppressed to 0.05 times per year (6.8 times per year in the traditional solution). The unit price of the equipment is 520 yuan, which is only 25% of that of the management type. The anti-salt spray corrosion coating extends the equipment’s lifespan to 11 years (4 years for ordinary equipment), reducing the total maintenance cost by 62%. The image interruption time has been compressed from an average of 3.6 hours per year to 24 seconds.
The on-board network of rail transit takes advantage of its anti-vibration characteristics. According to the measured data from CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive, when the train’s running vibration frequency is 15-200Hz (with a peak acceleration of 5.2G), the signal attenuation rate of the equipment is only 0.03dB/km (the industrial grade standard requires ≤0.1dB/km). The carriage monitoring system adopts daisy-chain topology. When six unmanaged industrial ethernet switches are connected in series, the end-to-end delay is less than 2ms, the transmission success rate of emergency braking instructions reaches 100%, and the reliability is improved by 4 nines compared with the wireless solution.
The monitoring scenarios of energy facilities demonstrate safety adaptability. The wind farms of the National Energy Group use Ex ia IIB T4 explosion-proof certified equipment, which can work stably in an environment with hydrogen concentration > 0.02mg/L. Three switches are installed in a single wind turbine tower to connect vibration/tilt sensors. The power consumption is stable at 5.8W per unit (12W for managed equipment), and the battery backup time is extended by 40%. The Ulanqab project in Inner Mongolia has confirmed that this plan has reduced the average annual communication failure duration of a single wind turbine from 8.7 hours to 16 minutes, and has decreased power generation losses by 92%.
